When u try to self destruct, that just amuses the pirate(s). I would say, if u can put up a fight, then go for it. If not and you are sure to die, shoot the pirate anyways just for kicks

I agree that most pirates are scumbags of the Eve-niverse for preying upon the little people such as myself. Been gate camped at 0.4 too many times. Most of the time, it is shoot first, talk later. Worst, was in a hauler...
Bottom line, dont pay. Probably they will still pod you after you have paid them.

Well, after so long that I have been playing this game, I have yet to meet any pirate that asks for ransom. Most of the time it is shoot first, talk later. Unfortunately, I have met pirates that shoot/pod me without even saying a word. Sometimes, if you are unlucky enough, you will even get podded at a 0.4 gate, which you need to pass in order to get to all the high sec. areas. Imagine, just one 0.4 gate out of 22 jumps!
Seems from this thread, there are two kinds of pirates:
1. Shoot first, talk later.
2. Talk first, shoot later.
TBH, most of the pirates in this thread are encouraging to pay up for ransom, whereas most victims are do not encourage such terrifying acts. So, you decide whether you should pay up or not. Once bitten, twice shy.
No wonder, most carebears are always avoiding 0.4 areas and below, why? It is because most seasoned carebears have been terrorised one way or the other occasionally. I do not blame them if they say, "Pirates are scumbags, i.e. the trash of society, do NOT pay them!" You pirates are better off pirating alliances in 0.0 areas, you make more ISKs and fun from them than pirating carebears who will be annoyed and upset coz all of their hard work are lost. In the end, when carebears quit, there will be no commodity to make anymore. Who will lose then, probably Eve.
